About product

Kyushu Q1W1 Lorna masking set 1:72 (Artillery models)

A set of pre-cut masks in 1:72 scale for the Japanese twin-engine Kyushu Q1W1 patrol airplane, known by the Allied reporting name Lorna. It is neither a kit nor decals: the masks are stuck onto the glazed areas of the model, those are sprayed over with the framing color, and once they come off a sharp edge is left. On this type in particular the aid is especially useful, because the machine has a glazed nose, a long glass cabin and further glazed areas, that is, considerably more frames than an ordinary single-seat fighter. The exact contents of the set, the number of pieces and the material of the masks are not stated here.

What the set solves

Intricate glazing is the most demanding part of painting a whole model in 1:72 scale. The frames are thin, there are many of them, and the border between glass and frame has to be straight, or the model looks careless even if the rest of it has come out well. Cutting strips of masking tape by hand over that number of windows takes longer than the build itself, and the result tends to be inconsistent. Pre-cut masks follow the shape of the particular panes, so the frame is sprayed the same width on every window and the whole glazed part looks coherent.

How to work with the masks

Degrease the glazing and rid it of dust. Lift the individual masks off with tweezers, lay them down dry and press them with a wooden point, above all in the corners and on curves. On a long cabin work from one end and keep checking whether the masks overlap. First spray the interior shade of the frames, then the external color, so that the frame matches on both sides. Spray thin coats at lower pressure, so that the paint does not build up under the edge of a mask. Remove the masks shortly after drying with an angled pull. A small bleed can be lifted away with the tip of a toothpick moistened with the thinner for the paint used.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers building Japanese airplanes in 1:72 scale
  • Anyone after clean painting of intricate glazing
  • Builders who do not want to cut dozens of strips of tape by hand
  • Anyone who paints with an airbrush and wants a uniform frame width

The package holds the masking set only. The model, paints and glue are not included, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. It is a masking set in 1:72 scale intended for painting a model you obtain separately.

The airplane has a glazed nose as well as a long cabin, that is, a great many thin frames. Painting them by hand is difficult and uneven.

The target kit is not stated here. Before buying we recommend comparing the shape of the glazing with the kit you are building.

Shortly after drying and with an angled pull, not straight up. Small bleeds can be lifted away with the tip of a toothpick moistened with a suitable thinner.
