About product

Landsknecht halberdiers, 16th century, 1:72 scale, Red Box

A figure set of infantry armed with a halberd. Compared with the pikemen of the same line it has a different role in a scene: a halberd is a weapon for a shorter distance, so these figures belong where formations clash, or on the flanks and guarding a formation, not in the rear ranks of a block.

What the set captures

Infantry of the 16th century with a polearm ending in a cutting head and in period dress. Neither the number of figures nor the make-up of the poses is stated. For building a scene the essential point is that poses of this type tend to be more dynamic than with sets with a long weapon; they are set out in smaller groups and will bear even standing alone, because a single figure stays readable.

Painting: varied dress without masking

The dress of this period is varied in color and in 1:72 scale it cannot be handled by masking: tape would not hold on a small figure and would not sit on the shape anyway. What is left, then, is a thin brush and judgment about how much detail makes sense. A practical procedure: first the whole dress in a base tone, then the individual areas with one extra color, and only at the end any division. Do not deal with every stripe; two or three differentiated parts are enough for a figure to come across as varied, and more detail merges from a distance and reveals imprecision from close up. Separate the color areas with a dark line at the seam, by which they set one another off. At the end unify the whole figure with a faint wash and spray it with a matte varnish; varied painting without a matte varnish comes across as restless and the individual areas fight one another optically.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of 16th century dioramas in 1:72 scale
  • Modelers who add close-quarter units to block formations
  • Collectors of historical figure sets
  • Modelers who want to practice color division on a small figure

The figures are supplied unassembled and unpainted. Paints, glue and a base are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Limit yourself to two or three differentiated parts and separate the areas with a dark line at the seam. An effort to paint in every detail is lost from a distance.

It unifies the sheen of different paints, protects the surface during handling and with varied dress it calms the overall impression considerably.

It differs by the armament stated in the name and thereby also by its role in a scene: a halberd is a weapon for a shorter distance than a pike. No further differences are stated.
