Waterslide decals in 1:72 scale from the British manufacturer Xtradecal. According to the name the sheet is the first part of a set of technical lettering for Phantoms in the FG.1 and FGR.2 versions in Royal Air Force form. It contains the servicing and warning markings that on a real aircraft are spread over the whole surface, and not the national insignia and unit codes. The actual extent is given by the manufacturer on the packaging and in the instructions supplied.
The FG.1 and the FGR.2 are the British versions of the two-seat twin-engined Phantom fighter, both with Rolls-Royce Spey turbofans, which called for a wider rear fuselage and modified air intakes. The FGR.2 was the multirole variant for the Royal Air Force, while the FG.1 came from a naval order and some of the machines later reached land-based units. The small technical lettering on the real aircraft gives a model the credibility of scale and is therefore a popular supplementary item.
With small decals the soaking time decides. Dip the cut-out piece in lukewarm water for only a few seconds and then lift it out onto a paper towel: the decal should release from the backing on the model and not in the dish. When the film floats away by itself in the water, the adhesive is gone and the decal will not hold. With a damp brush carry the piece together with its backing to the target place, draw the backing carefully out and fine-tune the position while there is water under the film. Cold water slows the soaking down, while hot water dissolves the adhesive needlessly fast: lukewarm is optimal.
A decal sheet is not a kit. The model, paints, varnish and glue are not included in the package.
