About product

Masks 1:72 Mitsubishi Ki-46-III Interceptor, Eduard

Pre-cut self-adhesive masks for the glazed surfaces of a Ki-46-III model in the interceptor form, in 1:72 scale. It is not a kit of the aircraft but an accessory to one. Eduard, a Czech maker from Obrnice near Most, die-cuts the masks from thin yellow kabuki paper: it yields well to curves, stays in place and leaves no adhesive on a clear part once removed. The parts are lifted out of the sheet, stuck onto the glazing and removed after spraying, so that frames of even width with a sharp edge are created.

The real subject

The Mitsubishi Ki-46 was a twin-engine reconnaissance aircraft of the Japanese Army Air Force, valued above all for its high speed and ceiling, thanks to which it could evade intercepting fighters for a long time. The Ki-46-III version was the furthest developed, and some of the machines went through a conversion into an interceptor intended against high-flying bombers. The conversion meant a different nose with armament and a change to the glazing, so it differs in shape from the reconnaissance version, which matters when masking the glazing.

Tips for sticking them on and spraying

First wash and degrease the glazed parts; on a greasy surface the paint bleeds under a mask. Lift the mask out of the sheet with a scalpel, lay it on and press it down, then rub the edges over with a toothpick, above all where the mask follows a curve. Spray in thin coats: first the color of the interior of the frames, then the base and finally the camouflage. A thick coat of paint creates a step on the edge of a mask that shows once it has been removed. Remove the mask soon after it has dried and pull it at an angle along the edge. With the long glazing this type has, it pays to remove the masks one at a time and to keep checking whether the paint is lifting as well.

FAQ

Do not count on it. The interceptor conversion had a different nose and revised glazing, so masks cut for it may not suit the reconnaissance version.

It is not. It is a separate set of masks, and the model of the aircraft is sold separately.

The frames of the glazing are visible from inside the cockpit too. When the inner shade is sprayed first and the outer camouflage only over it, the cockpit looks credible from both sides.

As short a time as possible. The adhesive hardens over time, and removing it late risks the paint peeling off as well.
