This item is an accessory, not a kit. The resin interior goes into a Mustang model in place of the plastic cockpit. The P-51D is one of the most frequently built aircraft of all, and that is exactly why detail is worth watching here: a model standing at a show next to other Mustangs has to catch the eye with something other than its type. The cockpit under the bubble canopy is the first place everyone looks.
The Mustang's bubble canopy gives an uninterrupted view inside from every direction. A plastic tub with suggested walls and a flat instrument panel loses out badly in that situation. A resin casting gives three-dimensional side walls with wiring and frame structure, a raised panel and a seat that an injection mold cannot manage in one piece. Check the exact composition of the set against the instructions in the package.
Wash the castings in warm soapy water first, to remove the mold release agent from the mold. Cut the casting block off with a fine-toothed saw and level the mating surface by sanding on a firm support; protect your airways when sanding resin. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue). Always dry-fit the cockpit before the fuselage is glued together and sand the inner walls down if necessary. The Mustang's interior is painted in a dark base shade, and once that is dry the edges are brought out with a dry brush and the recesses accentuated with a dark wash. Finish the harness and the handles with a brush, and complete the cockpit and let it dry before the clear canopy goes on.
The set is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
