A set of photo-etched seat belts for a model of the patrol flying boat Martin PBM-5A Mariner in 1:72 scale. It is not a kit but an accessory for the pilot's compartment. The designation STEEL in the name refers to the steel version of the etching: against brass, steel holds the shape of a bend better, so a belt can be draped over a seat and left to hang freely instead of returning to being flat. On an aircraft with glazing as extensive as the Mariner's, the belts are one of the best visible details of the cabin. The manufacturer is the Czech company Eduard.
The Mariner was a twin-engined patrol flying boat of the US Navy, recognizable by its gull wing and twin vertical tails. It flew long patrol missions over the ocean, hunted submarines and took part in rescue operations. The PBM-5A version was amphibious, with retractable wheeled landing gear thanks to which it could operate from the water as well as from a hard runway, and it was still serving in the postwar years.
Separate the belts with a scalpel on a hard surface and shape them with tweezers with smooth jaws, so that no marks from the jaws are left on the metal. A belt that is not straight but slightly undulating looks convincing. A tiny drop of super glue applied with the point of a pin is enough to fix it. Paint the seat before you fit the belts.
