The Catalina is a twin-engine machine with the wing carried above the hull on a pylon and with characteristic glazed waist blisters. It was created for long patrol flights over the ocean and managed them at a time when other aircraft had to turn back after a few hours. The difference between the two versions in the name is fundamental for a build: the PBY-5 is a pure flying boat that never leaves the water except up a slipway, whereas the PBY-5A has retractable wheeled landing gear and is amphibious. The form of the model and the base you stand it on follow from that. Besides patrol work and the fight against submarines, Catalinas became famous for rescuing survivors at sea.
The glazing of the waist blisters is the biggest challenge of shape; it pays to set it in and clean it up before the hull is painted. The bottom of the hull is usually the most heavily worked, so weathering around the step and the rivets looks natural. Lay the decals onto a gloss coat and on the curved side of the hull help yourself with a decal softener a drop at a time.
