Pierced steel planking for a field airfield in 1:72 scale is a diorama accessory for creating a taxiing surface, a base for a model rather than a model itself.
Responsibility details are not available.
During the Second World War and for a long time afterwards, pierced steel plates were laid on muddy or sandy ground so that aircraft could take off and taxi on it. The individual panels interlocked into a continuous mat and their regular pattern of holes became one of the most typical images of field airfields. This accessory from the Czech maker Brengun brings them into 1:72 scale and serves for building a diorama surface: it is not an airplane kit.
You get the best result if you do not merely lay the surface on the base but sink it into it: leave the surrounding terrain slightly higher so that soil, grass or sand comes right up to the edges of the planking. The regular pattern is rewarding in that it visually leads the eye and naturally marks out the area the model stands on. A continuous mat is not necessary: a half-cleared strip of planking with wheel ruts along the sides looks more convincing than a perfectly laid surface.
Thin etched plates are cut with a scalpel or photo-etch scissors; then level the edges with a file. The material is thin enough to be bent slightly and to follow unevenness in the terrain, and it pays to make use of that. Attach the plates with super glue or with a thin layer of two-part adhesive, which fills the gaps underneath. Start painting with a primer and a dark base, followed by a shade of weathered steel and light rust in the details. The final soiling does the most: in reality mud and dust settled mainly in the holes and along the joints, so apply pigment or a thicker wash exactly there and wipe the excess off.
The accessory is supplied unpainted and serves to complete a scene. Glue, paints, terrain and a model are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
