A pair of stores of a weapon you will not confuse with anything else. At the rear, in place of the usual surfaces, it has grid fins resembling small gratings, and it is precisely those that make this missile a rewarding detail on a finished model.
The missile came into being at the turn of the nineteen-eighties and nineties as a response to Western weapons with their own radar in the seeker head. The essential change against the older generation lies in the fact that in the final phase of flight it guides itself and the carrier does not have to go on illuminating the target. The pilot can therefore aim elsewhere right after launch, or press an attack on several targets at once. The grid surfaces at the rear can be folded against the body, which saves room under the wing and in the fuselage bays alike. It entered service on machines derived from the MiG-29 and Su-27 types and became their main weapon at long range.
The grids call for care twice over: mechanically and while painting. Thick paint will flood the openings and the effect will disappear, so spray heavily thinned, in two or three thin passes, and let the part dry freely between them. A check against the light will reveal a clogged aperture before it is too late. Keep the body in a uniform light tone and create the colored bands with narrow decals. Leave the gluing right to the end, once the coat on the aircraft is finished.
The missiles make up separate accessories. The kit and the modeling chemicals have to be acquired separately.
