Montex masking set 1:72 SIAI SF-260

A set of self-adhesive masks for the cockpit glazing of a model of the light SF-260 aircraft in 1:72 scale. According to the name it is intended for the outer side of the canopy; masks for the inner side and masks for the national insignia are not part of it. It is neither a model nor a part of one but an accessory for painting a kit, from the maker Montex.

The real subject

The SF-260 is an Italian all-metal single-engine low-wing monoplane with a piston engine, a three-seat cabin and characteristic tip tanks on the wings. It arose as a fast touring and aerobatic aircraft and, thanks to its excellent handling, spread as a trainer with a number of flying schools and with further operators around the world. The cabin has a large glazed area with several frames, which in 1:72 scale come out very thin, and that is exactly why pre-cut masks pay off on them.

Usage tips

In a small scale the masks are tiny, so work with sharp tweezers and in good light. Degrease the glazing in lukewarm water with a drop of dish soap and let it dry freely. Lay the mask on dry, check the seating against the light and only then press the edges down with a soft tool. Go over the edges with a thin coat of clear or of the base color, so that any gap is sealed. Spray the paint in thin coats, as a heavy coat leaves a step at the edge. Take the mask off shortly after drying, while the paint is still flexible, and pull it at an angle back over itself, not straight up.
