This plastic kit in 1:72 scale captures the Soviet 9K714 Oka missile system, known in the West as the SS-23 Spider. The model is the launch vehicle on its heavy wheeled chassis together with the missile it carries, so the result is markedly longer and heavier than an ordinary armored vehicle kit. It is supplied unassembled and unpainted, and the parts are of hard polystyrene.
The 9K714 Oka system was an operational-tactical missile system introduced in the Soviet Army in the 1980s. The carrier was a multi-axle amphibious wheeled special vehicle that carried a single-stage solid-propellant missile under a hinged cover. The system was designed as a mobile weapon able to move under its own power and to change its firing position quickly. At the end of the 1980s it became the subject of disarmament negotiations and was withdrawn.
First assemble and clean up the chassis: on vehicles with many axles it pays to glue the wheels on only after painting and to make sure they all sit in one plane, otherwise the model rocks. Dry-fit the lifting mechanism and the missile cradle until it is clear in which position you want to display the model. Paint the missile and its cover separately from the body, as the transitions are then easier. Use an airbrush and a primer on the large flat areas of the body, and once the matte surface has dried, apply a gloss coat where the decals go. Keep the weathering restrained; dust pigments on the wheel wells and the underside of the body will add weight without overpowering the shape.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
