SR-71 Blackbird — exhaust nozzles 1:72 is a resin add-on set from the manufacturer Metallic Details that replaces the nozzles at the rear of the engine nacelles. It is not an aircraft kit.
Responsibility details are not available.
An add-on set in resin in 1:72 scale for a model of the SR-71 Blackbird strategic reconnaissance aircraft. It covers the rear part of the engine nacelles, that is the exhaust nozzles — unlike the set of inlet spikes, which deals with the opposite end of the nacelle. It is not an aircraft model but a detail part for a kit you already own.
The nozzles are one of the few places on a model that the viewer looks at from close up and straight inside. For technical reasons a plastic kit molds them with a thick wall and a shallow depth, so that the result looks like a blind hole. A resin casting allows a thin edge and a deeper, more elaborate interior with the elements suggested. On the real aircraft the rear of the nacelles was moreover the most heat-exposed place on the airframe, so this is exactly where weathering makes the most sense.
First wash the parts in warm water with detergent and free them of mold release agent. Cut the casting block off with a saw and polish the mating surface on glass with abrasive paper, so that the nozzle joins the nacelle without a step. Bond with cyanoacrylate glue. Start the painting with a primer, continue with a dark metallic base and create depth with a dark wash; apply the burnt shades sparingly, in layers and best of all with an airbrush, so that the transitions are not patchy. Darken the inside of the nozzle before you fit it to the model — after that you can no longer reach in there.
An add-on set in resin, not an aircraft kit. The base model, glue and paints are not included in the package.
