An injection-molded plastic kit in 1:72 scale from the German maker Revell. It covers the Panavia Tornado in the IDS strike version in the modernized ASSTA 3.1 standard, that is in the state after a further stage of avionics modernization. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted, on sprues, with instructions and a decal sheet. The exact number of parts, the extent of the decals and the number of schemes offered are given on the packaging and in the instructions of the kit.
The Panavia Tornado is a two-seat twin-engine combat aircraft with a variable-geometry wing that came about as a joint European program. The IDS version was conceived for all-weather strike tasks at low level, for which it had terrain-following radar and automation for low-level flight. Power comes from a pair of afterburning turbofan engines. The ASSTA standard represents successive stages of modernization of the onboard electronics, navigation, communications and integration of new armament on the machines of the Luftwaffe; the designation 3.1 corresponds to one of the later stages of this program. A characteristic feature of the airframe is the variable wing sweep, which allows both fast flight at low level and acceptable takeoff and landing behavior.
On the Tornado it pays to give attention to the cockpit: the two seats and the instrument panels are clearly visible with the canopy open. Try the variable-geometry wing mechanism dry before gluing, so that the wings sit symmetrically in both positions. Test-fit the fuselage and the air intakes dry beforehand, and fill and sand the seams once glued. Apply primer, spray the gray camouflage with an airbrush in thin coats and go over it with gloss varnish before the decals. Pick the engraved panels out with a panel liner and even the whole model out with matte varnish at the end. Fit the pylons and the tanks only after painting, as the model is easier to handle that way.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
