An injection-molded plastic kit of the modernized Soviet long-range bomber Tupolev Tu-22M in the M3 version, NATO reporting name Backfire-C, in 1:72 scale from Trumpeter. It is a large and richly equipped kit with variable-geometry wings. The M3 version differs from the older M2 above all in its wedge-shaped air intakes, similar to those of the MiG-25, and in a reworked nose drawn slightly upward; compared with the M2 it also received more powerful engines. The box holds clear parts for the canopy glazing, separate entry hatches and a wide choice of external weapons. The Tu-22M is a Soviet supersonic long-range bomber and missile carrier with a variable-geometry wing. The Tu-22M3 version is the most capable production variant, with more modern avionics, more powerful engines and reworked air intakes. After disarmament negotiations it lost the air-to-air refueling equipment that the older M2 carried. The type formed the backbone of the Soviet strike forces and serves in this version to this day.
Cut the parts off the sprues and glue them with liquid cement for plastic. Paint and pick out the cockpit before closing the fuselage, and mask the clear parts while spraying. On a model this large, take care to join the fuselage parts firmly and squarely, to get a clean transition on the wedge-shaped intakes and to watch the mechanism of the variable-geometry wings. Apply a primer and the colors with an airbrush, apply the decals over a gloss coat and pick out the extensive panel lines with a wash. Finish the missiles and bombs at the end.
