About product

Yokosuka MXY-7 Ohka model 22 in 1:72 scale (Brengun)

This is an injection-molded plastic kit of the small Japanese attack aircraft from the end of the Second World War, in 1:72 scale. The box holds a gray sprue with the plastic parts, a clear sprue for the glazing, a set of resin parts for the wooden support stands on which the machine rested before being hung under its carrier, decals and instructions. The model is meant to be glued and painted; it is not a finished product. Brengun is a Czech maker that has long devoted itself to less usual aviation subjects in precisely this scale.

The real subject

The Ohka was a single-seat attack weapon of the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service, carried under a parent bomber and guided onto the target by its pilot after release. The Model 22 version differed from the rocket-powered Model 11 in its propulsion: it received the Tsu-11 motorjet unit, that is, a piston engine driving a compressor, a shorter fuselage and a lighter warhead, so that the faster and smaller Yokosuka P1Y Ginga could carry it. The aim of the change was to extend the range and reduce the vulnerability of the carrier. The Model 22 version remained at the testing stage to the end of the war and never reached combat use.

Building and painting tips

The model is small and the part count low, so take all the more care over clean joints and thin edges. Glue the plastic parts with thin cement for plastic, which is drawn into the joint by capillary action. Wash the resin supports in warm soapy water first to remove the mold release residue, cut the casting blocks off with a modeling saw and glue them with cyanoacrylate, protecting your breathing when sanding resin. Lay on a primer before painting, which will also reveal any imperfect filling. An airbrush is an advantage on a model this small, because it keeps the coat of paint thin and does not fill the engraving. Choose the particular scheme and the placing of the decals according to the references in the instructions.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of Japanese aircraft of the Second World War in 1:72 scale
  • Modelers looking for a quick build with an unusual subject
  • Builders of display groups of late Japanese designs
  • Modelers with experience of small resin parts

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No. It is a kit that has to be glued and painted. Glue and paints are not included in the package.

The Model 22 had the Tsu-11 motorjet unit in place of rocket propulsion, a shorter fuselage and a lighter warhead, so that a smaller and faster carrier could take it.

They make it possible to build the wooden support stands on which the machine rested before being hung under its carrier. They are separate castings that have to be washed and cut from their casting blocks.

Thanks to the low part count, yes, but the parts are small and the resin calls for cyanoacrylate glue. Basic building experience helps.
