This package from the Japanese manufacturer Fujimi holds two complete plastic kits of the Soviet SU-85 tank destroyer in the small 1:76 scale. Self-propelled guns operated in batteries, so a pair of machines is more natural for an Eastern Front diorama than a single piece — and the second kit gives you room to try a different finish or weathering.
The SU-85 came about in 1943 as an answer to the heavy German tanks, against which the short gun of the previous self-propelled mounts was no longer enough. The designers used the proven chassis of the T-34 tank and built an 85 mm gun into a fixed casemate, able to threaten even Tigers and Panthers at combat range. The machine without a rotating turret was lower and simpler to produce; it served in self-propelled artillery regiments until the more powerful SU-100 replaced it. The name of the product keeps an older designation taken from German terminology; factually it is a Soviet tank destroyer.
Building a fixed casemate without a turret is quick even for a beginner. The typical finish is Soviet protective green; on the Eastern Front the machines weathered heavily, so do not be afraid of mud on the running gear, dust on the casemate and wear on the edges. A winter scene suits a worn white camouflage laid over the green base.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
