Dark Earth is a dark earth brown, one of the two colors of the classic British camouflage of upper surfaces. Paired with dark green it forms the scheme by which British aircraft are recognized at first glance, and in desert schemes it goes with lighter sand tones. The designation BS381C/450 in the name refers to the number of the shade in the British standard.
On the upper surfaces of British aircraft of the early Second World War, where the brown and the green alternate in irregular fields. The shade also suits later machines on which the camouflage lasted longer than on fighters, and it works as the base for earth tones on accessories, landing gear bays and dioramas. It also serves well for mixing the shade of a dusty surface.
The transitions between camouflage fields on British aircraft tended to be fairly sharp, so it pays to spray the second shade through a template held just above the surface: the edge stays legible and yet is not unnaturally hard. Use the thinner intended for this range; the thinning ratio for spraying and for the brush is given by the manufacturer on the packaging. Stir the paint thoroughly beforehand and apply it in several light coats, otherwise the surface detail will disappear.
The paint is intended for builders of British aircraft and for modelers who need a dependable earth brown tone for camouflage and for dioramas. Thinner, brushes, an airbrush and the model are not included in the delivery, unless stated otherwise.
