4-Legged Walking Robot with Wind-Up Generator is a Tamiya construction kit of a four-legged walking robot that does without batteries: you produce the current yourself by turning a hand-cranked generator.
Responsibility details are not available.
A construction kit from the mechanical robotic range of the Japanese company Tamiya. The model walks on four legs and is powered from the hand-cranked generator enclosed, so it needs no batteries. Turning the crank spins the generator, it produces current and the motor in the model sets the legs moving. It is a clear demonstration of how muscle power is turned into electricity and back again into mechanical movement.
The front legs are shaped like the letter L and carry the movement to the rear pair as well, thanks to which the walk is smooth and the model holds its line. The generator unit works with a gear ratio of 38.2:1 and delivers a voltage of roughly 2.5 V with no load. The direction of the walk is steered by the direction in which the crank is turned: turning it to the right makes the model go forward, and turning it to the left makes it back up. The pace of the walk matches how quickly you turn the crank, so you have the speed under direct control.
The build is simple, the parts snap together and no soldering is needed. Watch that the joints of the legs run freely and that the lead between the generator and the model does not get in the way of the movement. Turn smoothly, as jerky turning shows in the walk at once. The model moves best on a level floor or table with a little grip. Painting is not needed, as the parts are made of colored plastic.
The set is supplied unassembled. Tools beyond those in the package are not part of the delivery, unless stated otherwise.
