A collector resin figure in 54 mm size from the brand Abteilung 502. The 54 mm size corresponds roughly to 1:32 scale and it is the classic format of figures meant to be displayed on their own, not an accessory to a vehicle model. The subject is a soldier of a Scottish Highland regiment from the Crimean campaign of 1854, a period that leaves room for a richly colored uniform and for work on fabric.
Resin castings are supplied on casting blocks and carry fine parting seams left by the mold. Cut the block off with a saw or a knife leaving a margin and sand the remainder away; never break a part off, because resin cracks in unexpected places. Once cleaned up, wash the whole figure in lukewarm water with a drop of dish soap: the surface tends to carry remains of mold release agent, through which neither paint nor primer will hold. Check the fit of the parts dry, fill any gaps with putty and sand them back. It is glued with super glue, because ordinary cement for plastic has no effect on resin. Wear respiratory protection while sanding and cutting, as resin dust must not be inhaled.
The basis is a very thin primer, which evens the surface out and reveals the seams left behind. At 54 mm size the smooth transitions are already clearly visible, so it pays to shade and highlight in layers instead of covering the whole area at once. Abteilung 502 is a brand known above all for oil paints, and oil is not acrylic: it thins with mineral spirits or turpentine, not with water, and it dries in a matter of days rather than minutes. That long open time is an advantage when blending shades on skin and on fabric, but it forces you to work in stages and to plan what will dry first. Anyone working with acrylics has to build the shades up with many thin glazes instead. Leave patterned fabrics until last, when the rest of the figure is finished.
The figure is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Paints, glue and a base are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
