About product

Hawker Sea Hawk FB.5 WM969 in 1:72 scale from Aviation 72

A finished metal collector's item, assembled and painted, in 1:72 scale, the manufacturer's part number AV7223001. The model is unpacked and stood in a display case - no modeling work awaits it. The distinction here is the serial number WM969: it is one particular surviving aircraft, not the general colors of the type. The second Sea Hawk of the same range carries a different version and a different serial number, so check before buying which machine you are buying. Check the finish and the extent of the package on the box.

The real subject

The Sea Hawk was a carrier-borne jet fighter and ground-attack aircraft of the Fleet Air Arm, not a Royal Air Force machine - this mistake turns up often with the type. Its recognition mark is the bifurcated exhaust nozzle at the sides of the fuselage, thanks to which the fuel fitted above the engine in a thin airframe. The FB.5 version is a fighter adapted for attacks on ground targets. Machine WM969 was handed over to the Royal Navy in 1954 and from September 1954 to February 1956 served with 898 Squadron on the carrier HMS Albion in the Mediterranean. From 1964 it belonged to the school of aircraft ground handling at Culdrose and from there it passed into museum collections, where it is displayed to this day.

What to look for in a finished model

On a metal model in 1:72 what decides is the cleanliness of the printing of the serial number and the codes, the seating of the landing gear and the smoothness of the joint between the wing and the fuselage. The model is intended for display, it is not a toy. The range comes out in limited editions and this part number is listed by the manufacturer as discontinued.

Who the model is for

  • collectors of British carrier-borne aviation equipment
  • anyone interested in a model of one particular surviving machine
  • builders of collections in a uniform 1:72 scale

This is a finished model, not a kit. Check the workmanship, the assembly, the painting and the extent of the package on the box.
