A plastic kit in 1:12 scale from the Italian brand Italeri. It is not a model of the aircraft: the subject is the pilot's cockpit of the F-16 fighter alone, that is the instrument panel, the seat, the controls and the surrounding structure, built as an exhibit in its own right. The large scale allows detail to be rendered that would be lost in an ordinary aircraft kit. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted.
The F-16 differs from older fighters in the layout of its cockpit: the pilot sits in a steeply reclined seat in order to withstand g-loads better, flies with a side stick instead of a conventional central one, and has a view through a frameless canopy. It is exactly this combination that made the F-16 cockpit one of the best-known workplaces in aviation and a rewarding subject for a model of its own.
In a large scale the surface and clean work are what count: sand the joints carefully and apply the paint in thin coats. The instrument panel deserves the most time, because it is what everyone looks at first. The dials can be brought out with a drop of gloss varnish, which imitates glass. Set the seat apart by texture, as the belts and straps have a different surface from the metal frame, and add wear where the pilot leans.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
