About product

What the color is for

Semi-matt Aluminium is a metallic aluminum shade in a semi-matt finish, that is, somewhere between the sheen of freshly polished sheet and the flatness of a weathered surface. That very degree of sheen tends to be the most usable one on a model: the deep metallic look stays, but the highlights do not overpower the shape and the surface does not read as a mirror. It finds use on aircraft with bare duralumin skin, on engine cowlings, on landing gear legs, on exhaust shrouds and anywhere bare metal is meant to show.

Application and thinning

Metallic shades carry a pigment that settles in the container more than in ordinary paints, so stir the contents really thoroughly before use rather than merely shaking them. The thinner intended for this line and the thinning ratio are stated by the manufacturer on the packaging, so follow the instructions. Apply it in several light coats; with metallic shades a heavy coat accentuates every fault in the base and the paint loses its fineness.

Tips for metallic shades

The base decides the result more than with any other paint. Sand the area smooth beforehand and go over it with a smooth base coat, because a metallic shade will not hide scratches and sanding marks and instead brings them to light. Let the finished coat cure properly before you put masking tape on it, or it will take a piece of the surface with it when it is lifted. If you divide the surfaces into several metal shades by individual panels, the surface gains depth and stops looking uniform.

FAQ

On areas where bare metal is meant to show: the bare duralumin skin of aircraft, engine cowlings, landing gear legs and the area around exhausts.

The thinner intended for this line. The manufacturer states the thinning ratio and the recommended way of applying it on the packaging.

Most often the cause is paint that was not stirred enough or a rough base. Sand the area smooth and stir the contents of the container properly.

Yes, but only once the coat has cured thoroughly. A fresh metallic surface comes off with the masking tape.
