An injection-molded plastic kit of the first nuclear-powered submarine in the world, the American USS Nautilus (SSN-571), in 1:305 scale. The set is issued by the German manufacturer Revell in the Model Set edition: alongside the sprues with the parts, the decals and the instructions the manufacturer also adds the basic paints, a brush and cement for polystyrene. The 1:305 scale is unusual for this mold, but that is how the box gives it.
Nautilus was the first submarine with a nuclear reactor and marked a turning point in underwater navigation. Diesel submarines had to return to the surface repeatedly to charge their batteries, whereas the reactor made it possible to run submerged for weeks and at speed. She was commissioned in 1954 and in 1958 she became the first vessel to pass under the ice cap across the North Pole. The hull still has the classic shape with a deck on the upper side; later American submarines received a teardrop form.
The submarine is built from two halves of the hull, so the lengthwise seam is the crucial part. Fill the joint, sand it back with fine paper and check it with a thin coat of primer, which reveals any shortcomings. Handle the boundary between the dark upper part and the red-brown bottom with masking tape, starting ideally with the lighter shade. A smooth ship hull forgives little, so work in thin coats and lay an intermediate gloss clear coat before the decals.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. In the Model Set edition the basic paints, a brush and glue are included in the package; other accessories are not.
