An injection-molded plastic kit in 1:32 scale from the Ukrainian maker ICM. The release carries the name Arctic Cobra and covers AH-1G machines in the striking finish used during trials in cold climates. In 1:32 scale helicopters are attractive because the scale allows a legible cockpit interior and rotor head detail without any add-on sets. The contents of the package, the number of parts and the number of decal schemes are given in the instructions supplied with the kit.
The Bell AH-1G was the first production attack helicopter of the US Army. It grew out of the design of a light utility machine, from which it took the engine and rotor group, but it was given an entirely new slim fuselage with the crew seated in tandem. The narrow silhouette, the stub wings for carrying armament and the tandem cockpit became the defining shape of the whole later family. Machines tested in cold climates carried conspicuous high-visibility markings that differed markedly from the normal operational finish.
In a large scale, start with the cockpit: once it is glued up and the glazing is in place you cannot get to it again. Fit the clear parts with an adhesive intended for clear parts so that they do not fog, and mask them before the primer goes on. Set the rotor blades in one plane and let them dry on a flat surface; a warped blade is immediately visible in a large scale. Spray the striking finish over a light base so that the shades cover without many coats, and apply the decals over a gloss coat, then seal with a matte one when dry. Keep the weathering restrained, as test machines were usually kept cleaner than hardware in the field.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
