About product

1:32 Tyrrell P34/2 - a six-wheeled single-seater in the Model Set edition

An injection-molded plastic kit of the best-known six-wheeled Formula 1 car in 1:32 scale from the German manufacturer Revell. The number after the slash denotes the particular chassis of this type. The Model Set edition is a gift package which, according to the manufacturer, holds not only the parts but also basic shades of water-thinnable acrylic paints, a brush and cement for plastic.

The real subject

The P34 was designed for the Tyrrell team by the engineer Derek Gardner, who built it on an idea without parallel in Formula 1: instead of two large front wheels it was given four small wheels ten inches in diameter. They were meant to reduce the frontal area and to increase the contact patch of the tires under braking and in corners. The single-seater appeared in the 1976 season, and Jody Scheckter won the Swedish Grand Prix with it, where Tyrrell took both of the first two places. It remains the only six-wheeled car ever to win a race in the history of Formula 1. The power unit was the eight-cylinder Ford Cosworth DFV.

Building and painting tips

The four small front wheels must stand straight and at the same height, so glue the axles on a flat surface and check them before the cement sets. Finish the suspension, the exhausts and the cockpit before you seat the body. A smooth finish calls for a filler primer and thin coats so that the large decals do not silver. Leave the tires matte and only dust them lightly.

Who the model is for

  • Fans of 1970s Formula 1 and of engineering curiosities
  • Beginners who will appreciate paints and glue in a single package
  • Collectors of single-seaters in 1:32 scale
  • As a gift for anyone who follows the history of motor sport

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. According to the manufacturer the basic paints, a brush and glue are part of this package, other accessories are not, unless stated otherwise.

Yes. Jody Scheckter won the Swedish Grand Prix with it in 1976, and Tyrrell took both of the first two places there. It is the only win by a six-wheeled car in the history of Formula 1.

It denotes the particular chassis of the P34 type. Individual chassis differed in body detail and in color scheme, which is why manufacturers distinguish them on historic single-seaters.

The geometry of the four front wheels. The axles have to be glued on a flat surface and checked to make sure all the wheels stand vertical and at the same height while the cement is still wet.
