A set of plastic kits in the large 1:32 scale from the Ukrainian company ICM, which brings together in one box the three best-known training biplanes of their day: the German Bücker Bü 131D, the British de Havilland DH.82A Tiger Moth and the American Stearman PT-17. All three machines filled the same role, but each by a different design route, so side by side in a display case they form a natural whole.
The Bücker Bü 131 was a German two-seat training biplane of the 1930s, agile and popular in aerobatics too. The DH.82A Tiger Moth was the British basic training type with its characteristic swept-back wing layout, on which an enormous number of Commonwealth pilots went through their training. The Stearman PT-17 was a rugged American training machine with a radial engine, built to withstand rough handling by beginner pilots. All three types went on flying long after the war as sports, towing or agricultural aircraft, and a good many of them are in service to this day.
A biplane is built differently from a monoplane: the key thing is to set the upper wing exactly parallel with the lower one. It pays to prepare a simple support and let the glue harden without any load. The bracing wires between the wings, which modelers often add themselves, are run right at the end, after painting and applying the decals. The 1:32 scale allows the open cockpits and the engine to be worked up properly, because they are clearly visible. Pick out the fabric surfaces with a faint breath of a darker color along the ribs rather than with pronounced lines.
The models are supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
