A turned metal barrel in 1:35 scale for the German tank destroyer Nashorn with the 8.8 cm Pak 43/1 L/71 gun. It replaces the barrel from the kit and rids a model of the lengthwise join left by the plastic part.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Nashorn was a German tank destroyer of the Second World War, built on a chassis derived from medium tanks. It carried the 8.8 cm Pak 43/1 anti-tank gun in an open superstructure at the rear. The figure L/71 after the designation of the weapon does not give the caliber but the length of the barrel expressed in multiples of the caliber, so the barrel is seventy-one times longer than the diameter of the bore. It is that long slender barrel that gave the gun its high muzzle velocity and it is at the same time the most conspicuous element of the whole silhouette of the vehicle.
The barrel is turned from metal, which gives it a perfectly circular section along its whole length and a sharply open muzzle. The plastic part from the kit is made of two halves, so a lengthwise join is left on it, and on a long thin barrel that is the hardest of all to sand down. A metal replacement does away with that step and it stands careful handling without bending. The way it is attached and any work needed on the kit parts are described in the instructions enclosed with the set.
Cut off the original barrel as the instructions say and level the seating surface, so that the new barrel sits true to the axis. Try the part dry first and look at the model from the front to see whether the barrel points to one side or downward. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue applied in a small amount. Before painting, wash and degrease the metal and use a base coat meant for metal, or you will peel the finish off during handling.
This is a replacement part for a model. The kit of the vehicle, paints and glue are not included in the delivery, unless stated otherwise.
