About product

Centurion Mk.5/2 with the 105 mm gun in 1:35 scale from AFV Club

An injection-molded plastic kit of the Centurion main battle tank in the Mk.5/2 version, that is with the 105 mm gun, in the form used in the 1950s and later in the armies of the NATO alliance. The model comes in 1:35 scale from AFV Club, a manufacturer that has long specialized in armored vehicles and is known among modelers for well-detailed suspension and running gear.

The real subject

The Centurion appeared at the end of the Second World War and became the first British machine to combine heavy armament, solid armor protection and usable mobility in a single design. It served for decades and in many countries. The original armament was gradually replaced by the 105 mm gun, which became the standard for a whole generation of Western tanks; the rearmed machines carried the designation Mk.5/2. Among the most striking features of the type are the long hull, the fairly tall turret and the running gear with Horstmann suspension, in which the wheels are paired and hidden behind the side armor skirts.

Building and painting tips

On vehicles of this type it pays to assemble and paint the running gear before you close the hull and fit the side skirts; after that the wheels and the tracks are hard to reach. Spray the lower hull and the inner faces of the fenders with the base color in advance. Dry-fit the turret and the superstructure to check the alignment before gluing. Use a thin cement applied by capillary action on the plastic, and let thin parts dry thoroughly. Spray the base shade with an airbrush over a primer, then add a dark wash in the recesses, bring out the edges with a dry brush and finally dust the running gear and the lower areas with pigments. Always keep the tracks a shade darker and dirtier than the hull.

Who the model is for

  • Modelers of armored vehicles in 1:35 scale
  • Anyone interested in postwar vehicles and their long service with a number of armies
  • Builders who want to practice weathering the running gear and the tracks
  • Modelers with experience of building vehicles, given the detailed suspension

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No. It is a classic plastic kit. Glue, paints and tools are not included in the package.

The designation refers to rearming with the 105 mm gun. The specific differences between individual machines varied from one user to another.

Vehicles from this manufacturer tend to have finely broken-down suspension with a larger number of small parts, so it suits modelers with some practice.

A thin cement applied by capillary action suits injection-molded plastic. It can be painted with acrylics or enamels; what matters is spraying a primer and working in thin coats.
