About product

A traditional Vietnamese hat in 1:35 scale

The set brings headgear for a figure in 1:35 scale, not a model and not a whole figure. The conical hat is so striking in shape that it can be used both put on a figure's head and as a separate prop element of a scene — laid on the ground, hung on a fence or on a load. The same subject comes out in further scales too, so choose according to the scale of your figure.

The real subject

The conical straw hat is common civilian headgear in Vietnam and in the wider region of Southeast Asia. It is woven from plant leaves on a light hooped frame and is held on the head by a cloth band led under the chin. It protects against sun and rain alike and is so characteristic that on a modeling scene it determines the place of the action on its own. It appears on civilian figures and on figures from the period of the Vietnam War.

Fitting, cleaning up and painting

First separate the part from the casting system with a sharp blade or a fine saw as close to the part as possible and level the trace of the sprue gate with a finer-grit sandpaper. If the set is cast in resin, wash it in lukewarm water with a detergent before painting to rid it of residues of the release agent, and choose the glue according to the material: on resin a cyanoacrylate super glue, on plastic parts a thin glue for plastic. Sand resin wet and with protection for your airways.

The hat looks best with a light straw base, onto which a very diluted brown wash is laid — that accentuates the woven texture. Avoid saturated brown shades, as straw is lighter than it seems. Brighten the circumference of the brim gently and leave the center darker. Set the chin band apart in color, so that it does not disappear by blending in. Before gluing, check the set on the figure's head dry; the hat is worn set high and slightly to the rear.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers of civilian and military figures from Southeast Asia in 1:35 scale
  • Builders of dioramas from the period of the Vietnam War
  • Modelers of genre scenes with a civilian population
  • Makers of Vietnamese scenes looking for a striking prop element

This is an accessory for a figure, not a model on its own. The set is supplied unpainted; paints, glue and the figure are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No, it is only headgear for a figure in 1:35 scale.

Civilian and military scenes from Vietnam and Southeast Asia. The hat can be put on a figure's head or used as a prop on its own.

Start from a light straw shade and draw the texture out only with a very diluted brown wash. Saturated brown shades turn straw into wood to the eye.

The number of pieces is not stated here; check it after unpacking.
