About product

Heavy cruiser Blücher 1:350 — a Trumpeter kit

A plastic kit of the German heavy cruiser Blücher in 1:350 scale from the manufacturer Trumpeter. According to the manufacturer it offers an optional full hull or waterline version, engraved decks, the complete armament including the light anti-aircraft weapons, torpedo tube mounts, ship's boats and a crane, two floatplanes molded in clear plastic, photo-etched parts, decals and a display stand.

The real subject

Blücher was the second unit of the German Admiral Hipper class of heavy cruisers and entered service at the end of 1939. The main armament was eight 20.3 cm guns in four twin turrets, backed by the secondary and anti-aircraft artillery and by torpedo tubes. The cruiser also carried a floatplane and a catapult. Her service was short: on April 9, 1940 she led the German force into the Oslofjord and was sunk by the fire of Norwegian fortress artillery and by torpedoes from the shore. Blücher was therefore never fully committed in the open sea.

Building and painting tips

Decide right at the start whether you will build the full hull or the waterline version — the rest of the sequence and the stand follow from that. Pull the long hull joints together in sections and let them dry properly. Cement photo-etched parts such as railings and mesh with cyanoacrylate glue only after the base color has been sprayed. Mask the decks and the superstructures apart with masking tape, and paint the clear aircraft parts with the frames masked. Keep the weathering in proportion to the short service of the real ship; heavy rust streaks would not look true on her.

Who the model is for

  • Builders of warships in 1:350 scale
  • Collectors of the German surface fleet of the Second World War
  • Modelers who want to add photo-etched parts to the model
  • Advanced builders — the range of armament and small parts is large

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Yes, the manufacturer gives an optional full hull or waterline version. Choose the variant before you start the build, because it also affects the use of the stand.

Yes, the manufacturer lists the photo-etched parts as part of the package together with the decals and the stand. Check the exact extent on the box.

She belonged to the Admiral Hipper class and was its second unit. She differed from her sisters mainly in details of the superstructure and in a very short service, because she was sunk in April 1940.

It is an extensive model with a large number of small and photo-etched parts. For a first ship in 1:350 it is demanding, but with experience from smaller models you will manage it.
