About product

Mitsubishi F1M2 Pete Model 11 1:48, Hasegawa

A plastic kit of the Japanese observation float biplane Mitsubishi F1M2 in 1:48 scale from Hasegawa of Japan, manufacturer's part number JT96. The Allied code name of the subject was Pete, the Japanese designation Type Zero Observation Seaplane, Model 11. The package holds gray and clear plastic frames and a decal sheet. The machine stands on a large central float and two auxiliary floats under the wings.

The real subject

The F1M came about to a requirement of the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service of the 1930s: it was to launch from the catapults of battleships and cruisers and direct their gunfire onto the target. In practice its duties spread far beyond observation. The machines served as local fighters, convoy escorts, light bombers, patrol and anti-submarine aircraft, and as rescue and transport machines on the extensive island bases of the Pacific. It was the last combat biplane of the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service, and that is precisely why it remains one of the most interesting subjects of the period.

Building and painting tips

With a biplane the order of work decides everything: paint and glue the cockpit, then join the fuselage and only at the very end set the upper wing with its struts while it is still free. Mask the clear parts before spraying, not after. Sand the floats in good light so that the shape of the keel stays readable, and finish the light underside shade with gentle drybrushing. Add the rigging wires only after painting, best of all from stretched sprue.

Who the model is for

  • followers of the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service
  • modelers who enjoy seaplanes and biplanes
  • builders of a collection in 1:48 scale
  • anyone interested in shipboard gunnery spotting machines

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
