A set of pre-cut painting masks in 1:48 scale meant for a model of the Lockheed SR-71A reconnaissance aircraft. It is not a kit but an accessory. According to the name the masks are made of yellow kabuki paper - a material that holds its shape, can be fitted to curved areas and leaves no adhesive on the finish once removed. The set is cut to the shapes of the Revell kit of this aircraft in 1:48 scale, so masking the glazing and the frames falls away even where cutting by hand would take hours.
The Lockheed SR-71 was a twin-engine reconnaissance aircraft designed for flight at high speed and great altitude. What is characteristic of it is the elongated silhouette with flat transitions from fuselage to wing, a pair of engine nacelles with movable spikes at the intakes and two canted vertical tail surfaces. The airframe is dominated by a dark finish, which places high demands on the cleanliness of the surface on a model - on a smooth dark area every fingerprint and every imperfect masking transition shows.
Stick the masks onto a fully cured, smooth and degreased surface. Kabuki paper will stand a little stretching, so press it down on the curved edges of the fuselage with a soft tool and, if need be, nick it along the curve. Spray the glazing in the interior shade first and only then in the color of the airframe - the frames then look right from both faces. Lay the paint on in thin coats at right angles to the mask. Take the mask off as soon as the paint is dry to the touch, and pull it at a shallow angle along the surface rather than upward. With a dark finish, count on needing to even the sheen out by going over the whole model with clear after unmasking, otherwise the transitions will show.
The package holds only the masking set. The kit, paints and glue are not part of it.
