A motorcycle kit in 1:6 scale from the Japanese manufacturer Tamiya. The large scale means that the model is built much like the real machine: the engine, the frame, the wheels and the steering are each assembled separately. The subject is the anniversary version of the Honda Monkey minibike, which differed from the standard production version above all in its colors and finish. Thanks to the 1:6 scale the finished model reaches a respectable size and comes across more as a display piece than as a small kit.
The Honda Monkey is a small motorcycle with wheels of tiny diameter, a low seat and a four-stroke single cylinder of just under fifty cubic centimeters. It appeared in the 1960s, originally as an amusement park attraction, and gradually became a production machine with a large following. Early models had folding handlebars so that the motorcycle would fit in the trunk of a car. It is precisely the combination of simple design and unmistakable looks that has made the Monkey a long-standing collector's favorite; the anniversary editions are among the most sought after.
Start with the engine and the frame, that is with the parts that carry the rest of the structure. The glossy surfaces of the tank and the fenders deserve careful preparation of the substrate: sand the parting lines down, lay on a filler primer and spray the color in thin coats, because in a large scale every unevenness shows. Chromed and polished parts are better not glued with ordinary cement for plastic, which attacks the surface, but spot-glued with cyanoacrylate. Lay the decals onto a gloss clear coat and, once dry, seal them with a clear coat of the sheen you want. Tighten wire cables and screws with feeling; plastic threads strip easily.
