About product

Avro Lancaster B.III Special The Dambusters (1:72, Airfix)

An injection-molded plastic kit of the British Avro Lancaster B.III Special four-engine heavy bomber in 1:72 scale from Airfix. It is a big, large model - the span of the finished aircraft is over 40 cm. The boxing captures the specially modified machines from the attack on the German dams: it contains parts for the faired-over dorsal turret as well as the characteristic cylindrical Upkeep mine with its trolley, which can be displayed on the aircraft or on its own. Parts for building the standard B.III version and decals for two marking schemes are enclosed as well.

The real subject

The Lancaster was the backbone of British night bomber aviation in the Second World War. The B.III Special version was created by conversion for the secret operation against the dams in the Ruhr in May 1943, made famous by the crews of No. 617 Squadron. The aircraft carried a rotating cylindrical mine which, once released, bounced across the water all the way to the dam wall - hence the nickname Dambusters. Because of it they had the dorsal turret removed and the bomb bays modified. They were powered by four Rolls-Royce Merlin V12 engines.

Building and painting tips

On a large model it pays to build in sections and keep checking the fit; finish the interiors before closing the fuselage. Mask the extensive glazing and the turrets carefully. Decide in advance whether you are building the special for the raid or the standard B.III - the propellers and the equipment differ. Glue the plastic with liquid modeling cement and sand the joints down. Apply the dark night camouflage with an airbrush and lay the decals onto a gloss varnish.

Who the model is for

  • For admirers of British heavy bombers and famous air operations.
  • For modelers who want a large, striking model for a display case.
  • For collectors interested in the attack on the dams and No. 617 Squadron.
  • For the moderately advanced - because of the size, the part count and the glazing.

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
