This is a book, not a kit. This title is volume number 21 of the flagship Airframe and Miniature series of the British publisher Valiant Wings Publishing. The volumes in the series are divided into a part on the airframe (development, variants, technical description, detail photographs and camouflage) and a modeling part (available kits, built models, surveys of accessories, masks and decals). The author is Richard A. Franks. It takes in the postwar service: foreign air forces, civil machines, the Lancastrian and test aircraft.
The Lancaster did not end with the war. Some of the machines passed to maritime reconnaissance and to search and rescue, others went to foreign air forces and civil companies. The Lancastrian also grew out of the Lancaster: a transport and mail conversion with the gun positions stripped out and the nose and tail faired over, which in the first postwar years carried passengers and mail on long-distance routes. Some airframes ended their days as test beds for the first jet and turboprop engines, so two generations of power could be seen on one aircraft at the same time.
For modelers of the postwar Lancasters, the Lancastrians and the test machines. Watch out for the pair of volumes: this is part 2 on postwar service, while wartime service and the Manchester are dealt with by a separate part 1, volume number 20.
