The shade FIELD GREEN-GREY lies exactly on the boundary of green and gray. It is neither fresh grass nor cold concrete, but that tired color that ammunition crates, canvas, field telephones and the small equipment of European armies used to be given. It is reached for by anyone to whom a saturated green seems too fresh and a bare gray in turn dead.
The pigmentation is aimed at coverage. On a dark surface the tone holds already after the second thin coat, so there is no need to lay one thick coat, which would flood the fine engraving of the surface. The dried area stays smooth and matte, without glossy islands, and later washes, filters and dry pigments settle on it well.
On large areas of vehicles it proves useful to apply the paint in the direction in which water would run down. The strokes then merge and no streak is left behind that would show through a later dusting with pigment in side light.
On figures it serves well as the middle tone. By brightening with a drop of sand the edge of a backpack or a helmet is pulled out, while by adding a brown a fold of fabric is sunk instead. With vehicles it tends to be more advantageous to lay it over the whole area and create the differences only by subsequently lightening the upper panels, because the shade itself carries little internal contrast.
