A mustard shade is peculiar in that it looks yellow and dirty at the same time. It has an earthy undertone, so it does not behave like a pure color but like a material - like cloth, dust or a faded finish. That is exactly why it is reached for where a saturated yellow would look like something off a toy and where a surface is to tell of time spent outdoors.
In historical modeling it covers uniform cloth, straps, canvas on trucks and tarpaulins. On vehicles it serves as the starting tone of desert finishes, which are only aged by further layers. In civilian subjects it appears on furniture and interiors of the 1970s, where this color was everywhere. And in fantastical scenes it works well on old parchment, on scrolls and on leather tanned hard.
Earth tones tend to be the most saturated in acrylic ranges, because they contain pigments that cover well by nature. The practical consequence is that a surface closes up in one or two strokes and no grainy texture arises on it of the kind that appears with repeatedly overpainted light shades. At the same time it means that the paint can be thinned markedly and used as a glaze without falling apart into blotches.
The shade is worth getting even for those who build mostly modern machinery - as a base under dusty deposits it suits across periods and scales. It is applied with a brush, and if it is to pass through a nozzle, thinning it slightly is enough. The bottle is shaken briefly before work, so that the settled pigment comes back into the whole volume.
