Acrylic Color Smoked Blue - a smoky blue-gray

Smoked Blue is a blue pulled toward gray, as the Acrylic Color figure line from Green Stuff World has it. Shades of this type tend to be the hardest working ones on a palette: on their own they do not shout, but with them a saturated blue can be subdued, a cool shadow built, or gear painted that is not meant to draw attention. The paint is an acrylic, it thins with water and it mixes with other acrylics.

Mixing tones of your own for a whole series

• A smoky blue is a good mixing tone. Added to a saturated blue it calms it; added to gray it gives it a cool cast.
• When you need a mixed shade for ten figures or more, mix it in a larger amount straight into a resealable container and note the ratio down. Making more of a mix in the middle of a unit is the surest way to make the second half look different.
• During longer work keep the paint on a wet palette, or a mixed tone will set on the palette before you manage to work it up.
• It thins with water or with an acrylic thinner, never with a lacquer one.
• Shake the bottle before taking paint out.
