A ruler in the shape of a T with a sliding arm. The crosspiece seats against the edge of a part while the longer section with the scale runs across the surface and holds a right angle.

A marking aid in which the cross arm seats against the edge of a part while the longer section with the scale runs across the surface. The right angle arises from merely offering it up, so it does not have to be estimated by eye or checked separately with a square. The sliding part allows an offset to be set once and carried over to several parts in a row, so parallel marks come out the same even after the work has been interrupted.
It comes into its own anywhere a distance is read off a smooth surface. That includes dividing masking tape into strips of constant width, leading a blade along the edge of a plastic sheet, marking the place for a new vision port or an interior bulkhead, and checking whether a bulkhead sits perpendicular to the fuselage. A metal edge stands up to the repeated touch of a knife substantially better than a thin plastic template, which is why it serves as a stop at the same time.
Lead the blade away from yourself and hold it vertical to the surface, otherwise the knife will slip under the edge and the line will wander to one side. Once the sliding part is set, tighten it and check the dimension on an offcut first, and only then carry the mark over to the part. A cutting mat under the work saves both the blade and the edge of the tool.
This is a workshop tool for permanent equipment, which is not worn out by one build and serves across scales and materials.
