A quartet of shades from the lacquer line, put together for air ambulance helicopters. The shades correspond to the RAL standard and cover the yellow base, the red markings, the blue band with the operator's name and the gray of the canopy.

An air ambulance service needs to be seen before anyone hears it. The Polish Lotnicze Pogotowie Ratunkowe therefore gave its Eurocopter EC135 machines in the P2 plus and P3 versions a bright yellow overall coat to the RAL 1021 standard. It is joined by striking red graphics on the fuselage and on the tail boom, an ultramarine band with the operator's name and a dark gray stripe across the canopy and the engine cowling. The combination is no accident: yellow holds its contrast against the ground and against the sky, and the dark gray around the canopy glazing suppresses reflections into the crew's eyes.
This is the lacquer variant, that is a solvent binder. It dries faster than water-thinnable acrylics, holds a sharper edge when sprayed over a mask and, once cured, takes sanding and subsequent weathering with oil paints without the risk of lifting the coat underneath. In exchange it asks for good ventilation, a respirator and thinning with the line's own thinner.
A saturated yellow behaves treacherously on a model, because it has weak covering power. It pays to lay down a white or light gray base first and only spray onto it in two or three thin passes.
Before you start masking the red graphics, let the yellow base cure overnight. The lacquer coat is dry to the touch in a few minutes, but it reaches full strength considerably later.
