What the stencil is for

An airbrush stencil with a wood grain motif. The sheet measures 90 x 60 mm and the manufacturer lists it for 1:32 and 1:35 scales. It is used anywhere a wood pattern is to be suggested on a model or on a diorama: floors, boarding, beds and side panels of vehicles, crates, pallets, fences or the wooden cladding of buildings. The pattern is created by spraying, so unlike a decal it follows rounded and uneven surfaces as well.

How to work with it

The stencil is laid on a dried base coat before spraying, not after it. Lay it down so that it is in contact with the surface over its whole area, and apply the shade of the pattern over it. Spray perpendicular to the surface and in several very thin coats; a heavy coat or an angled coat runs under the edge and the pattern is blurred. After spraying, take the stencil off carefully and clean it while the paint is fresh. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the box for the way the stencil is held in place and for the recommended cleaner.

Usage tips

• Test it first on an offcut of plastic or on a piece of card rather than straight on the model.
• Choose a shade only a little darker or lighter than the base, as a wood pattern tends to be subtle.
• The stencil can be shifted and turned within one area, so that the structure does not visibly repeat.
• It is advisable to seal the dried pattern with varnish before weathering comes into play.
