About product

AK Synthetic Dry Brush — XL

This is a single standalone brush from AK's range made for one specific technique: dry-brushing. For this range, the manufacturer states durable bristles and a dense, rounded head — the bristles need to be stiff and dense, since they scrub dry against the model's surface during work. A soft painting brush cannot handle this; it will splay out and highlight nothing. Size XL is the largest in the range and is built for large areas.

How Dry-Brushing Works

  • Dip the brush in paint — just the tips of the bristles, not the whole head.
  • Wipe off almost all the paint onto a rag, paper towel or cardboard. Only a minimal amount of paint should remain on the brush — that is what makes it dry.
  • Lightly drag it across the model's surface. Paint only catches on raised edges, rivets, plates and relief, while recesses and seams stay dark.
  • The result: highlighted detail and a three-dimensional look — the model stops looking like a flat casting.
  • Works with acrylic, oil and enamel paints.

Who Size XL Is For

XL is a large brush for large areas: tank hulls and turrets, ship hulls and decks, terrain, rocks, buildings and dioramas. It covers a large area quickly and evenly. It is needlessly large for figures and small detail — if you want to highlight uniform folds, a face or small parts, reach for a smaller size in the same range. Buying an XL for figures is an unnecessary investment in a tool that will not fit into the detail.

Important: dry-brushing wears a brush out. The bristles scrub dry against edges and fray and splay with wear — that is why a dry-brushing brush is sold separately and is not used for ordinary painting. Treat it as a consumable tool. Clean it right after use (acrylics with water, enamels with a suitable cleaner), and never let paint dry near the ferrule. Paints and thinners are not included in the package; ventilate when working with solvent-based paints.

FAQ

It is a technique, not a material. You dip the brush in paint and wipe almost all of it off onto a rag or paper. You then lightly drag the residue across the model's surface — paint only catches on raised edges and relief, while recesses stay dark. The result is highlighted detail and a three-dimensional look.

No, it is needlessly large for figures. XL is built for large areas — tanks, ships, terrain, buildings and dioramas. For figures and fine detail, get a smaller size in the same range.

For two reasons. Soft bristles just bend during a dry stroke and do not transfer paint onto edges. And more importantly, dry-brushing wears a brush out, since it scrubs dry against the surface. That is why a separate brush is bought for this technique and is then no longer used for fine painting.
