Aotake is the name for a translucent blue-green protective coating that appeared in the structure of Japanese aircraft of the Second World War. It was applied to interior surfaces and to the framework of the airframe, where it was to protect the metal against corrosion, and because it was translucent the original metal surface showed through it. The resulting impression was therefore never uniform: depending on the thickness of the layer and on the surface beneath, it moved from a faintly bluish sheen to a richer blue-green. For a modeler it is one of the shades that can give the interior of a Japanese machine believability better than any extra detail.
A translucent paint works differently from an opaque one. On its own it does not cover the surface beneath but tints it, so what is underneath matters. The best results come over a metal or silver coat, which gives the necessary sheen. Control the intensity by the number of layers, not by their thickness: every further layer deepens the shade, while one heavy layer dries unevenly.
Vallejo paints are acrylic and are thinned with water or with the thinner of this range; the Model Air range is prepared for application with an airbrush. Shake the bottle thoroughly before use, as the pigment settles at the bottom. The surface has to be clean and degreased. Once dry it is a good idea to protect the surface with varnish, as translucent layers are more sensitive to rubbing than opaque coats.
The model, thinner and other paints are not included in the delivery, unless stated otherwise.
