The set Assorted Crates from Woodland Scenics is a collection of miniature wooden shipping crates in HO scale (1:87) for bringing ramps, freight yards and warehouses to life.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Assorted Crates set belongs to the line of scenic accessories of the American brand Woodland Scenics intended for HO scale (1:87). The package holds wooden shipping crates in several sizes, which can be placed singly or stacked on one another into piles. The castings are finished and surface-treated, so they can be used practically straight out of the package.
Crates are classic equipment of a freight scene: they belong on the ramp of a warehouse, by the open doors of a boxcar, on the bed of a truck, in the corner of a locomotive depot or at a transfer point by an industrial siding. It is precisely small freight that turns an empty area into a place where work is evidently going on; without it even a carefully built building looks deserted. Because these are separate pieces, one set can be divided between several places on a layout and so create the impression of traffic in more than one scene at once.
Glue the crates down in spots with cyanoacrylate glue or with PVA glue; with loosely stacked piles it pays off to glue the whole group separately and only then to set it in place as a whole. The look can be taken further: a thin brown or gray wash will bring out the engraving of the boards, drybrushing with a lighter shade will pull out the edges and a light pigment dust will unify the crates with the surrounding terrain. At the end a matte varnish helps, so that the accessories do not shine beside their matted surroundings. Shades may differ slightly between production runs.
The accessories are supplied finished and surface-treated. Glue, paints and a base are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
