A metal head with six flats, 1.0 mm in size. It does away with turning and with leveling the height of pieces made by hand.
Responsibility details are not available.
Anyone who makes small fasteners himself runs sooner or later into the same obstacle: a single piece can be made, but twenty the same cannot. Work by hand has a spread, and with twenty pieces side by side that is more conspicuous than any inaccuracy of shape. An industrially made series does not know this problem; all the pieces have the same height and the same spacing of edges.
A whole millimeter across the head is the upper half of the fine grid. It is used where a joint is to be legible at first glance: brake discs, the mounting of shock absorbers, engine mounting feet in the frame, sometimes the tank brackets too. In larger scales it also serves as an ordinary joint of the bodywork.
Not the fitting, but the layout. Before you reach for the drill bit, go over the real subject and decide which places really do have a joint. A model strewn with heads everywhere it suited technically comes across worse than a model with five joints in the right places. A photograph of the real machine is of more use at this stage than any tool.
Drill into the part before you glue it to the rest of the assembly. A component lying loose can be supported and turned; one already built in cannot.
Keep the remaining pieces in a resealable bag together with a slip of paper on which you note the size. Hardly anyone can tell two neighboring steps apart with the naked eye after a few weeks.
