The 0.7 mm size from the family of collared hexes. It suits places where several joints stand side by side, from timing covers to exhaust flanges.
Responsibility details are not available.
As soon as a row of joints is involved, the individual piece stops deciding and the spacing takes over. The most common trouble arises from measuring by eye: the first two positions are right, the third moves by half a millimeter and the whole row visually drifts. On a finished cover or flange that is more distracting than any inaccuracy of shape, because the brain registers irregularity at once.
Print or draw a strip with the spacing, tape it to the part and prick the points through with a needle. The paper is then removed and you drill into recesses that can no longer move. With a circular arrangement a clock face helps: dividing by twelve is more accurate than guessing where the middle between two neighbors lies.
The 0.7 mm diameter is the middle of the fine part of the range and suits groups of flange joints: timing covers, exhaust flanges at the cylinder head, radiator mounts. It is with such groups that regularity is watched far more closely than the absolute size of an individual head.
The collar under the hex widens the mating surface and appears on the subject where a bare head would push through thin sheet metal. In 1:12 scale it also has a practical effect: the wider rim covers small imperfections around the drilled hole, so the result forgives more than a smooth head without a collar.
Make the final check through a phone lens; a small irregularity stands out in a photograph sooner than to the eye.
