Nine tenths of a millimeter, an intermediate grade often missing from ordinary drill sets. For a modeler who checks the size of the heads against photographs of the subject.
Responsibility details are not available.
Nine tenths is the size a modeler reaches for the moment one neighboring grade seems weak and the other needlessly hefty. Such a decision usually arises over a photograph of the real machine, where the ratio of head to surrounding part can be judged quite accurately.
Basic drill sets jump in steps of two tenths and nine tenths is usually not among them. Before you start, check that you have such a drill; installing into a hole a tenth narrower goes stiffly, and into one a tenth wider the part is held only by the glue. Anyone building a set up piece by piece tends to get this size among the last.
If you build by your own feel and do not bother with the subject, there is no point hunting for an intermediate grade. The neighboring sizes will do and you will spare yourself the search for a drill. Likewise in small scales, where the point is the impression of density rather than fidelity of an individual joint, a difference of a tenth is immaterial.
In 1:12 it works out at roughly an eleven millimeter bolt, which is the size of a swingarm, footpeg or brake caliper mounting. In larger scales it serves as a small joint on bodywork. The raised hex with its collar holds a shadow even after spraying, so the detail is not lost even under a flat paint.
Hold a scale against the photograph and compare the diameter of the head with something you know, for instance the width of the tire or the pitch of the radiator fins. An estimate by eye tends to be a tenth out, and that is precisely the difference this intermediate grade is bought for.
