bEXM-29 Gardonova [Brown], a kit from Bandai

A science fiction plastic kit from the Japanese brand Bandai. The designation in square brackets gives the color finish, here brown; the manufacturer also makes other models with the same code base and a different color suffix. The build goes ahead by the snap-fit system: the parts are nipped off the sprue and snap together without glue, and the plastic is already colored right through. Check the scope of the package and the dimensions of the model on the box.

A color variant as a building block

When a manufacturer releases the same model in several color finishes, it opens up one pleasant possibility for modelers: combining them. Parts from differently colored versions can be swapped around to create a color scheme of your own without your reaching for paint at all. The brown finish also suits a case where you want a more sober, field-worn piece in the group alongside more striking models.

Building and modification tips

Cut the gates off in two stages and finish the remaining stub with a scalpel and fine abrasive paper; on dark plastic a whitened edge shows even more than on a light one, so care pays off. When combining parts from other sets, try the assembly dry first to see whether the joints really fit. If you decide on painting, start with degreasing and a thin primer; only then the paint in light coats. Picking out the engraved lines with a paneliner and a matte varnish at the end will unify even a model put together from different sources.
