Black Red, an AK interactive 3rd Generation acrylic paint

A bottled acrylic with a water-thinnable binder. This shade is a red taken all the way to the edge of black: over a full surface it looks almost black and the red character only shows in the light or against a neighboring tone. That is exactly why it is a working color rather than a main one. It belongs in shadows, in seams, under red surfaces and on materials that should be dark but not dead black, such as leather, dark fabric, rubber parts and the deep corners of an interior.

Which surfaces it belongs on and how it behaves

Dark shades take on any base, so here you are not dealing with primer but with the opposite: watch that the paint does not eat the detail. The classic use is preshading. Spray it into the panel lines and shadows before the main color, then lay the main shade on thinly enough for the shadows to show through. The second use is shading an already finished red surface with heavily thinned paint. Mix it into reds when you need to darken without going gray; mixing it with black, on the other hand, makes no sense, as you would lose its only character.

Spraying with an airbrush

• For shadows and preshading thin it much more than usual, so that the paint is almost transparent.
• Work at low pressure and close to the model, because a thin line is blown apart at high pressure.
• A fine needle and nozzle help keep the shadow where you want it.
• Build it up gradually: an overdarkened shadow is harder to fix than one you strengthen later.
• Heavily thinned paint settles its pigment in the cup quickly, so stir it now and then while you work and flush the airbrush right after you finish.
