Light blue blossom tufts (Model Scene)

A finished growth ready to be laid down. Fine fibers carry tiny flower accents in a light blue shade and the tuft is lifted off the backing film in one piece. Blue is the rarest color of the whole range: in the real landscape it is formed by cornflowers, chicory or flax and it never takes up large areas. That is exactly how it should be treated on a model: as an isolated accent, of which there will be least on a scene but which will be seen.

Composition and photographing a model

Light blue has one specific property in a photograph: it is cool, and in daylight a camera pushes it further toward blue, so it looks more pronounced than it actually does on the bench. If you photograph models, count on that and use fewer of them than it would seem by eye. On the other hand they work well as a guiding point of the composition: a few blue patches at the edge of the frame will lead the eye gently to the main object. A combination with the yellow or white variant gives the cleanest contrast; with violet, blue merges at a distance.

How to work with the tufts

Lift the tuft with tweezers by the lower foot, not by the fibers. If the underside does not hold by itself, apply a drop of PVA glue or cyanoacrylate gel to the terrain, let it go tacky briefly and only then seat the tuft. Press it lightly into the base and scatter fine dust or earth at the foot so that the transition is not sharp. Shorten taller tufts with scissors from below, and reduce the density by dividing the tuft into smaller parts. Always plant blossom tufts in an otherwise green or dusty area: without calm surroundings they lose the contrast they are used for.
